I am amazed how many businesses have such a bad perception of what marketing actually is. Some think it is just the expensive advertising of products and services. When in fact marketing has many different uses and benefits.
“Marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, services, organizations, and events to create and maintain relationships that will satisfy individual and organizational objectives.”
-Contemporary Marketing Wired (1998) by Boone and Kurtz. Dryden Press.
Marketing in its most basic terms is the creating demand for a specific product or service by product design, pricing, promotion and distribution. For instance when you see a commercial for the Apple iPhone and you immediately get inspired to go and buy that is marketing working at it best. The commercial should tell you the price that you are willing to pay, a way of getting the phone, and the design should make you want the product so much that you can’t help but buy.
There are a plethora of different marketing techniques that companies use from press releases to print ads. All have varying amounts of success, but the main goal of all of these forms of marketing is to bring awareness and a desire to buy or use a company’s products or services.
Question
